Lately, I've been busy working on pages from the Spain and Portugal trip we took back in 2008. I'd hoped to have all the pages done before Persnickety Prints had their semi-annual sale, but it didn't happen. That's ok, as I was able to buy the credits I need, and more, so that when it IS done, I can print the pages right away. I'm drawing down to probably the last ten pages or so which means I can see it happening this month.
What has been striking to me is how much we've changed since 2008. Now I know it's 6 years ago but like those early years of life, a difference of 6 makes a lot of difference. A eight year old has gone through many many stages that are unknown to a two year old. A seventy, or nearly 70 year old, feels a lot different than a sixty-four year old does. I didn't know that!
So much of the middle years of our -my - life seem to have flowed on a somewhat unchanging level. Or so it seemed to me at the time. There were the hints... The baby weight of #2 child didn't come off so naturally in my 20s. I didn't fathom wrinkles until my late 30s. The first time I couldn't read small print at night led me to reading glasses in my 40s. Daily medication came into my life in my 50s and regular visits to a doctor and dentist were added to my calendar. In my 60s I reluctantly added exercise to my life.
These are the outside things that changed. But the inside ones are more subtle. At 64, I was ready to do a lot of travel with my dh. And we did! So much so that each year I wanted to do less. Each year, especially since retirement, I was more content to stay home and relish the days in my own home. I wanted less from the outside world and found the constant shifting of place, language, environment to be tiring and taxing. A lot shifted internally that I wasn't aware of except to find much less pleasure in things I once enjoyed.
Who knew there was a homebody waiting to come out? I may do more than Whistler's mother did in this portrait, but perhaps the real shift of the 70s is from an external focus to an internal one. I hope I reach my 80s to find out!

Change - Just a Bit!
I was seriously getting tired of the green blog background but it seemed a nice change when I was anticipating spring. Now that we had such an early spring and then what seemed like summer, I'd had enough. One day I'll change again, just as the weather has.
Out gardening today, it felt as if we were going into fall. brrrr. But I had a few plants to put in, some weeding to deal with before the rain comes again this week. I am so not into gardening and the prospect of bugs and TICKS this year makes it all the less appealing. But, my job it is.
But back to the blog...the only thing I still have in mind is a new header. I can't believe I totally forgot how to do that but I did so it won't be happening today! Maybe in early May.
Here's a nice photo from early morning in my kitchen. No I don't always burn a candle in the morning but I just felt like it on Sunday. Nice, huh?
btw, after seeing this photo, the candle holder went into the dishwasher! In this case, the photo didn't lie.

What about that word
No, no, not one of the bad words that now we say with only a letter. The N word, the L word, the F word. No, the word I'm thinking about is a good word. It's my word.
This goes back to this post . I had wondered what my word was as I had totally forgotten it. Maybe, I considered, I had internalized the word. Maybe I just forgot. But in any case, the wooden word just reappeared as I continue to clean out papers and so many unnecessary items round here. It's now hanging right behind me. I just have to change my perspective to

The Name of the Game
The other night I woke up at 3am thinking of something my dh had discussed with me. I guess the thought was just taking its time percolating in my mind because I sure I don't like waking up at 3am...
Earlier in the evening, we had discussed, yet again, his ongoing frustration with our (his) inability to combine our timeshare and credit card 'points' into one account. The greatest # are in my name and so those are used when we make hotel reservations hither and yon. What's the big deal?? I asked, seriously not seeing any issue. Well, they're in your name! he said. BFD!! So what?? I replied. He continued to mumble and finally said, Well I have to use your name!! and I don't like it!! I just shook my head and said So get over it... and went back to reading my book, thinking no more about what seemed to be a very much of a non sequitor to me. Fast forward to 3am.

I got it! He was having to do what women have taken for granted for so so many years. Ah, my dear, you can only be a person and conduct commerce if you use your spouse's name. Oh don't have a spouse? Well, you do have your Daddy's name don't you? I got it, I got it! He was so unfamiliar with this loss of name it shocked him and rightly so. He didn't like it! By the time this concept was starting to bother me as a women, I had already had two men's names. Even worse was carrying a passport that proclaimed me "a dependent of a person (abroad on..)" while his passport proclaimed he was "a person (abroad on...)". This now xh used to taunt me with that, reminding me that he was a person while I was merely a dependent of a person. "Can this marriage be saved?" I think not, and it wasn't.
When I finally woke up later in the morning, tho I was tempted to spring out of bed and dash to the computer, I had my tea and told my dh I got what was bothering him about the points. I reminded him that I had, once again, changed my name to please him when we got married even tho I had not originally planned to. I knew it meant more to him than it did to me. (aside..I only regret this when I remember I have moved down the alphabet in lines.) I said - Suppose you were named John Smith and you married Jane Doe, and henceforth you would be called Mr. Jane Smith. Get it??? He got it, and I know he does, but then he said...But sometimes they CALL me Maureen! Well unless the call center is in Mumbai I don't have a clue about that one! But I don't think we will have the points discussion again. Knowing the man, I suspect he will be processing this for some time to come.

Both legally and familiarly, as well as in my books,
I now have only one name, which is my own.

New Look...
Yes, I changed the layout. I was soooo tired of the brown and the narrow center. I mean, I had to go thru this renovation to get the kitchen layout I wanted, so I suspect it will be the same with the blog. It's still ME tho!!

Now it's time to learn how to make a different banner....long and slim. Learning something new is a good thing.
