Flashback Friday: End of School?

By now I hope you are out of school if you are in school, or your children are out of school if you have children, or it just feels like time for a break for you. I'm trying to make this summer be like the ones of my childhood. No real plans. Lots of books. Lots of just laying around and daydreaming. Catching up on Netflix movies and tv shows. Watermelon and iced tea days.

A sore ankle, which is making walking hard, has helped me in this decision.  But like the little girl above, I'm just ready to ...enjoy summer. I hope you are too! (or settling in next to the fire with a cuppa if you are Down Under.)

Oh no...did I eat too much?

Missed my Flashback Friday so this one is a bit belated. Hope all of you in the US had a great Thanksgiving! We had a restaurant meal to please one vegetarian daughter so there were no leftovers to tempt us later. I believe I will have to cook a turkey next week to make up for that.

But do you think tViolet might be worrying about her delicate frame? The photo is from the Library of Congress collection on Flickr, a great site for vintage images.

Flahback Friday 11 09 02 Family Trio

What a fascinating shot I think this is. The expressions on each of their faces; the 3 different directions in which they're looking; the clothes.  I also found it interesting that the only real physical contact is the boy's hand on his mother's neck. Does anyone else think the man has a good resemblance to Prince Charles? All in all, I find this photo a bit creepy somehow. What do you think?

Now from the clothing on this ad, it apparently is from the time when I was a child. Even though my mother and grandmother sewed, somehow they never decorated our refrigerator.  I suppose my childhood was lacking!

Don't you wonder how many refrigerators actually were clothed...in just 7 minutes???  It just boggles the mind...No wonder Valium was common and the Feminist Movement began. Really.

I don't know who Reg was but George was my dh's father. They appear to be a dandy pair of young men out in a bit of snow. George was in the seminary at Notre Dame, but had to leave and come back to Washington DC when his father died. Despite having to go to work and be the man of the family, he appears to have found fun in his life too! I am guessing that this is in the early 1920s and wonder if it was his wife, or wife to be who took this photo. No way of knowing...

A photo from the 80s from my son Iain. He was in high school in Paris and this is a ski trip they took. Not sure exactly where but I've always loved the gorgeous mountain view.

When my dh goes on a trip by himself he always adds the info of where he's staying on our digital calendar. He almost always makes the reservations for stops on his way there and returning. After 10 years of this, I have learned he always comes home early. Someone makes fun of my being a homebody, but boy he's the one who always cuts his trips short. But I love him, and have learned that if there's something I want to get done while he's gone, I'd better do it in the first days rather than the last.

Here's that cutie pie with the unruly hair as a boy, circa 1949.

I bet I could Photoshop that hair into submission...

These are my husband's parents in the very late 1930s. I can judge that because his sister Evelyn is 10 years older than he is and he was born in 1939. Is Mama pregnant there and using Evelyn to be modest? Is it Easter Sunday since everyone is so dressed up?

I also have no idea where this was taken but as they lived in Washington DC, and didn't travel far to my knowledge, I suspect it may be along the Potomac River. Great Falls?

As with so many vintage pictures there are so many unanswered questions. One thing I do know is that the extreme head tilting is something my husband does too! I always wonder what it's like to see the world so skewed so often?!?

This one isn't mine, but it is of 'my era.' The Library of Congress has a tremendous free image collection on Flickr and the connection is that my mother worked at the Library and I worked for Congress, so I could take out books for free! That is quite a privilege.

Ft. Lewis, Washington June 1944

My father was a SGT. in the US Army and stationed out in Washington state, far far from his home in the coal mining regions of Pennsylvania. He really spoke of Washington with fondness and wanted to move out there after the war. I don't recall the conversations but my mother wanted nothing to do with that idea as far as I know, and neither of them ever went out there for even a visit. It's funny now that so so many years later I have a son living in Seattle, and dh has family in Washington state also. Life comes full circle.
