AAM Monday: Project Life Week 10

The past few weeks have been a bit of a blur with my son's wedding. Week 10 was before it all but there were things at home that had to be done. Isn't it always times like that when the computer has a fit??

Just look at that computer. I was thrilled with the new office, even if it wasn't really furnished yet, and was darn cold.  But take a look at that computer! It was a new model and fast. Looking at it now you'd think it was ages ago.

Slip of the Hand

I'm usually pretty good about turning the computer off at least once a week so all the temp goodies that all these image heavy programs store go Poof in the Night! However, with the eye surgery, which really did go great, I had neglected it.

Yesterday morning, however, I was starting to do a serious clear up of my craft table, the table that recently was the home of my iMac in the failed standing computer use project. It was a good idea but I need a better stool/chair for when my legs say Enough! There is also very little leg space when I sit under that table as it was an Ikea coffee table that we hacked by adding tall red legs.  I doubt that I will ever have skinnier legs, and even if I did, it's still cramped.

Now back from that digression....As I was clearing things around, yep, not out :( , I slightly moved my iMac which is on the adjacent table and accidentally unplugged it. Ugh. That is definitely a no-no with computers but fortunately the iMac and the three EHDs gave me a dispensation from damage or scolding messages. You know the ones that make your heart sink when they say..."this ehd had been improperly ejected etc etc". I'm going to report them to Brene Brown and let her suggest non-shaming language.

Well I did spent a lot of time reentering passwords yesterday. It seemed to be a more complete purge of those little tidbits of information than usual but maybe it's just that it had been longer than I thought since I turned the machine off. I truly can't remember but what's new about that?? anyhow, I really should get back to that craft table. I have painting to do!

Flashback Friday: Is that a Computer?

It's  hard to think how much computers have changed over the past decade or so, but I had the newest and bestest that the State government could provide. Kind of laughable now, isn't it.

The building I am in was just renovated back in 2000 and that barren, cold room warmed up quite a bit in the coming months. We soon brought in quite a few incandescent lamps and never turned those ceiling florescents on again during the 10 years I worked there.  The drapes and paintings came a bit later as well as the few pieces of upholstered furniture.

One of the nicest things about this office, in addition to the view of the State House out the window with the flag, was that all the windows opened. As spring came, we loved having fresh air come in though we soon learned to keep papers on those deep window sills weighted down.

But this was in December 2000, just a few days until the start of the 2001 General Assembly in January. It was a time of promise both professionally and personally for me. I was right...there were many good things ahead.

Girl's got backup!

After the sudden death of my backup external hard drive, I'm back in business. That's a damn good feeling.

Tuesday Tutorial: About That Clock

This is not quite a tutorial today,  but rather a where-to-find.

I believe I had this screensaver on a former computer. However,  having had work and home computers for so many years, that could have been anywhere in the past 20 years back when we needed screensavers!  I've thought of this screensaver fondly on and off for a while as you can tell. I had to wonder and of course then Google it when I finally decided to search for this baby. Yes, I have the time in the corner of my beloved iMac, and yes I have an analog clock on my wall, but ....Well, if you like clocks and time you understand. So if you want the digital clock screensaver on your Mac  with Mavericks then try THIS LINK.  This version will NOT work on earlier OSystems however according to the description. If I find a link for that one I'll post it.

eta: This post was updated on August 24, 2014 as the earlier link no longer worked on my Mountain Lion. However, once I updated to Mavericks, the newer version did not work but the older one still on my hd did. Go figure... fwiw, fiqlo.com as far as I can see only had a download link that does not take your directly to the clock. Beware some links that require you to add a dedicated search engine. You don't need that by any means and you may have a hard time getting it off your computer.

Memory Installed

And I did it all myself...almost. After the simple installation, I had a awful sound when I turned the Mac back on. However, after my trying all configurations with the new and old memory, dh and I did the same. It was only when he really shoved it in, and we finally heard a bit of a click, that it worked. My fingers were dented from my shoving but it apparently wasn't enough.



I'm now on 4G of memory and purring happily.

Aha! now to just clear the table so I can turn the Mac over and install. Woohoooooo!

Wordless Wednesday: Meh

I'm Printing Again

Wow, a bit of a slog but I'm printing again with better color than I've ever had on this machine. Now I just have to migrate all of my files, and programs... A good selective housecleaning of the computer started before the erase disc and will continue as I work through the migration.

I'd rather be looking at this... but that's how life goes.

Not My 1st Choice

Ah the joys of a computer... I have had issues with printing color on my Imac since day one but resolved it in a back handed way. I still had my old MacMini so I would put the finished item on a flash, take it to the other computer, and print. Quick, good color and no wasted ink. I have switched printers on my Imac and still no resolution to the issue. But I could print photos, or digital layouts via the Mini. Then I gave the Mini to my seriously ill granddaughter.

Uh oh... no backup system to rely on. DH said why don't you get this resolved, and I finally called Apple. We tried this, we tried that, and finally it was suggested...that I erase the disk and start with a total new install. Ugh. I backed up all my stuff on an EHD that my dear dear husband didn't let me know he had! Goodbye his classical music, hello my files! I also have my TimeMachine backups on My Book and so now I wait to make that call.

Why am I waiting other than not just being thrilled about this? Because FedEx attempted to deliver my dh's MacBookPro to the wrong address!!!! It was to be at our house before 8am today, and when dh called FedEx they said they had made an attempt but no one was home. I'm glad no one WAS home at the wrong address.... We now wait for them to deliver or call if they can't find our house. We have a seriously easy house to find but this is not the first time we have had this experience with FedEx. Did my dh give them his cell phone as he always does? No....for once he gave the home phone.

So I wait, not wanting to tie up the line. 15 more minutes, and I use my cell to call Apple and sit down for the process. I may need pecan pie before I start as there's no chocolate around. I need pecan pie and patience.

On my desk...Feb 29

I love playing these games I find online. But now I'm wondering if this is a phenomenon of life 'down under'??? Whatever...it's fun. It was Kristy who suggested this one. Boy oh boy, desks have lots of interesting stuff.

So on my desk, there are many things but as it is pm, the light isn't that good with just the camera flash gripe gripe gripe and I have hair to color (mine!), this is quick and dirty.

You will see the corner of my Imac, the corner of the keyboard, the Who cd that will not record on Itunes (what is it with some old cds?), a drained mug of Russian Caravan, and the new thingamajig I had to buy to upload pics from my camera. It was dirt cheap but I can't believe I wore out the old one. Dh says yes I did...

Gotta put a note on the cal to check next Weds...Thanks Kristy
