Travel with Dan

Today I was looking for some old photos of Washington DC's old West End/Foggy Bottom similar to this photo of my father at his job at 23rd and M NW in 1963.


I found a blog that has some more information on the nomenclature of the names used for this area and the history and demographics but no pictures.  My father worked at General Tire which had this lot and a sales office. We lived in Prince George's County MD.

But in looking for the old photos, I came across this one which really IS a remarkable one. Well Done Dan Malouff!  (I did a slight edit to the original which you can see if you click the image below.)



As Dan says, you see the Potomac at the bottom, then Gaithersburg in the center and finally  the Baltimore skyline at the top.  Great shot! fwiw, you may find the comments on the original post interesting and they will identify that area of land stripped of trees on the VA side of the river.

A Glimpse into the Past

Kaija in Finlad has her own beautiful blog where she shares some of her amazing hand bound books. I cannot fathom doing such detailed and lovely work but a woman I know who moved North says the long winters invite hand work. I understand in my head but our own winters are not like that and I'm often on trips in the winter. In any case, Kaija has another project now where she is sharing photos taken by Emil, the husband of her great great Aunt Saima.
 

The snowy scenes just tug at my heart. I see them as I imagine my Lithuanian grandfather might have seen them in places just down the Baltic from Finland. I hope Kaija will be able to stick to her thrice weekly schedule of posting photos and I hope you take a look.  Emil's

Truly Amazing

I'm sure many of you have seen this by now, but sometimes my blog also serves as a reference for me. the sheer number of negatives, photographs, and still undeveloped film astounds me. We often wonder if our writing, our scrapbooking, our work will survive us. Isn't it great that Vivian's was found and valued?
