TBT - My Boys in Britain 1972

My two boys in England, back in 1972.  The younger one was born in January 1972 so I suspect this shot may have been done for the older one's birthday in August. Big brother is happy to look at whatever the cameraman was holding but younger one is happier to explore his toes. A great shot of both boys and one that always makes me smile.

I decided to use this image this week because the older boy is having a birthday next week.  Happy Birthday to my firstborn!

Throwback Thursday: 1969 Knaresborough

We arrived in England in the summer of 1968 but had to wait quite a few months til out house was done. We quickly learned about the English habit of tea breaks. Those months of waiting were in one room in a Bed and Breakfast.  We checked on our house every day and anxiously awaited its completion.

Eventually we moved into our house, the last one on a cul de sac and it was a wonderful street to live on. Our houses had all mod cons, including gas fired central heating, but in an ancient market town. The walk UP to town and back down kept me quite slim and fit for the next four years. In addition, there were so many little children on the street that we mothers took turns keeping an eye on them, giving the majority of mums some welcome time alone at various points during the day. In many ways it was a perfect location.

(That garage door in the background was a ICI Dulux color that we ended up calling 'bloke blue' as it was one of the very few outdoor gloss paints that seemed to be available at that time. It was everywhere.)

Throwback Thursday - How's 1946 For Ya

Throwback Thursday: Circa 1930

This is a photo of my dh's sister who was born in 1929. She is with her Aunt Evelyn who was always called Aunt Inin (sp).  My dh adored his aunt and she led a glamorous life in Europe and around the US. She was always willing to take her young nephew on trips including a train trip from Washington DC to San Francisco. Truly the way to travel when travel was a luxury.

I believe this photo was taken in Washington DC, where they all lived, amongst the beautiful cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin. The trees, originally planted in 1912, would still be young in 1930 and the Cherry Blossom Festival was a mere 5 years old then!

ThrowBack Thursday - Oh Those 70s

Yes, I know many of you were not even born in the 70s. Many of you. But these two lads of mine were.  Here they are, their very first time in California - mine too - in the desert near 29 Palms. I have always supposed that is a Joshua Tree but what did I know? I had spent most of my life on the East Coast, and the prior 7 years in England. I'll stick to this story until corrected.

These boys of mine have grown up to be men older than I was in this 1975 photo. The 8 year old knew how to look cool but the almost 4 year old may have been embarrassed by the non matching pattern of his trousers or did he know the future was so bright he had to wear shades! Fortunately, they no longer wear trousers like these. But then again, I've seen these plaids come back. What's old is new, over and over. I bet there are houses in this barren landscape now! A lot happens in almost 40 years.

Throwback Thursday: 1950

Every time I see this photo I recall how much I loved that dress. My mother and nana made all my clothes and I think I had more than one dress from this pattern.  Loved it and years later, I had one in a very similar style that I wore to the USNA graduation with a big straw hat. I met President Clinton that day and shook his hand and spoke to him. The dress was a winner!
