Waiting For Some Rain
Most of my gardening is done. I still have many petunias to plant but I had hoped to spray paint the planters first. I emptied the dirt into another container so that job is on hold now. With the cooler weather we've been having, the plants are doing fine even in their little market packs. In the usual May weather, they would have burned up. Not this year.
One of the planters I emptied had chives in it. I love chives - to eat - and for the wonderful flowers. I have many many chives now since they do multiply - a lot! - except for the place I planted the thinnings one year as a border. Not one made it. ???
But today I wait for a bit more rain. Right now it's like an Irish mist. Not rain but moisture you can walk through. I told my dh yesterday that some of these days are like the PNW or the old English summers I remember. A day great for the skin and the garden and really, not a bad day to wait.

Flashback Friday

No children, you don't plant the flowerpots! Here are my younger two children, after a session of washing my mother's flowerpots. This was her house in Davidsonville, one she bought for us and to be closer to the house in Bethany Beach DE. Looking at this picture, I recall how silly that little bit of patio was. The house was on 3 acres, and look at this postage stamp bit of concrete!
My blond lad was seven and a half, and my daughter was going to be six in 3 months. She still was very tiny for her age and looks like a toddler there. I don't think she did much of the washing dressed like that and I really don't recall who did it or why we did.I suspect my mother had plans to start planting and building the garden. This was the year she moved in...not long after we had been evacuated from Iran and I supervised the construction of that house. Sadly, my mother would die just two years later.

Finally...a new winter header
I coulda shoulda - didn't - use a photo from snowmageddon 2010 but instead stuck to the tried and true food pic. I was thinking that the photo of little pretty flowers was not only out of date but probably wishful thinking for this year. Flowers are transient little things but food is constant round here.
These guys were twice the size, at least, last year.

As I've watched the snow melt, bit by bit, I've seen the occasional serious garden damage. Falling, melting snow snapped the above plants in half. Sigh. My wonderful rosemary and lavenders are still hidden and in areas unshoveled. With my back on the mend, the only shoveling done round here is going to be by himself. I wouldn't even like to try to explain how and where he might shovel now. I've had enough gardens over the years to know that plants come and plants go. That's the cycle of life. I only hope my neighbor's fig trees have survived this year's shock trauma. I love my bowls of free figs!
