Flashback Friday

Not a really distant flashback but one that makes me recall just how many places we have gone and how many trips have been taken in 9 years of marriage. Himself can probably pull up a spreadsheet of the where and when's which is a good thing since there are times I wonder "Did we go there"? I half joke that if there isn't a photo, I'm not going to remember anymore. It's not just age, it's the quantity of places. Not a bad thing at all, is it...

And this flashback? One of the earliest trips we took in 2002. Seattle, bus to Vancouver, and then cruising the Alaska straits. Less than a year after 9/11, border security was tight in both directions but it was fun to see the countryside in the whole border area. Boy, it seems so long ago but here it is 9 years later and Oh the places we have seen. My packing skills are so much more refined, I have my own laptop to record the bits and pieces, and I know when to say Enough. I won't see it all, I can't see it all and still enjoy it, and I'm perfectly ok with that. Quiet, me time is just as important. The pauses in the journey help keep the joy in the journey, the Big Journey.

I want to try...

I would have never thought to paint WITH the tubes. The tubes of pain, a credit card, and water. Wow.

Write What's True

We are leaving Kauai today, and yes, it's beautifully paradise, and yes, this is a wonderful opportunity to see another part of the world and yes, the ocean is all around me and even a short walk from my bedroom. And yes, we will see the volcanos next on Hawaii, then Honolulu ....

But really? it's too hot for me, too humid, too much feeling the need to see what's here and eat again, and get in the car to ... It's always the to-ing and fro-ing that get me worn out.  I am worn out and as on most vacations, I just want a day to stay in bed and sleep. A day with no one else about and nothing I am pushed to do.  Somehow that never happens and somehow it's what I need the most.

Somehow I need to make that happen.

Flashback Friday

My mother, knitting for me most likely, on D-Day. This was actually her 2nd wedding anniversary and she was living in Philadelphia, working for the Signal Corps, and expecting me on August 15th. Poor woman, she had to wait till September 2nd to have me. I'm told it was a terribly hot summer and she was ready to deliver, for sure. My Aunt told me she was so ready, that finally she took herself to the hospital, and walked and walked around outside, in the heat, and eventually ...there I was.

Flashback Friday

The Mayo Lectures... could this have been the start? Look at the grasshoppers, ears attuned to the words of the master. Hmmm....all the grasshoppers are male, aren't they. SenSei appears to be in a trance like state. Maybe it's just that his cap is too tight. Maybe it's a sign.. Maybe he forgot his notes.

I seem to have no interest and am looking off into space. No idea what Brian is looking at - the porch roof? We can only wonder. I believe this was in the early 90s and we appear to have a good dose of the Huh?s here. Ah, the old days and a summer party.

Strip Ease

What a fun idea to do for an art journal! I saw this here, and couldn't wait to try it. I had some Hawaii tags that had been printed on the wrong paper and I hope you know how that is! Please say it isn't only me who does such things.

As soon as I had some free minutes yesterday, I went up to the studio, tore and arranged in under 15 minutes. I came back to the piece later in the evening and in 10 minutes or so had it all glued. The journaling bits were done in the first time block so wow...how cool is that for a technique!

I also had a bit left that I wanted to use so it went on the facing page. I'll write things later on that page and do more embellishments. Just not this week! I had fun, which I always say is the whole darn point. Strip Ease indeed! thank you Michelle, and thank you Janet for pointing me to this one. You oughta try it, it really is fun, and who doesn't enjoy tearing up paper. hehehe

eta: There is now a 3rd smaller bit of frangipane flower on this down at the bottom left. I knew I had cut one out but couldn't find it till I cleaned my table. Tomorrow, Hawaii

Noticing

5a.m. and the old boy Siamese was awake.

Awake and hungry? awake and feeling poorly? I don't know, but I do know he was awake and howling to beat the band when it seemed like night time to me. (We have great new blackout curtains.) The man of the house thundered out of bed to investigate but then again, he gets up at 05:30 usually. I just drifted in and out of sleep until about 6:30. Never totally asleep again, but happily in that half dreaming state.

There were vague notions of going to the gym, but they got vaguer as I got myself downstairs for the first glass of iced tea. It was time for noticing. Seeing the light shine in from the east is lovely. Seeing the smudgy sliding glass doors is not. So after taking some photos, I cleaned a few panes of the door and decided just to enjoy the morning, no matter when it started.

The gym? maybe tomorrow.

Catching Up

Not too much scrapping lately, as I have been trying to get some tag books done -one from the trip to Italy this year and one for an upcoming trip. I think I got a good bit complete through my recent Artist Wau studio day. That's always a great way to Just Do It.

The recent trip down to Virginia for the Green Valley book fair did get done. I'm glad they did for as many times as we've gone down there, I have rarely taken pictures of the books or the site. I guess I've been just to anxious to start buying!

Souvenirs

The whole point of our trip to Charlottesville VA was to to to the Green Valley book fair up near Harrisonburg. We buy books for a boys' middle school in Washington DC but of course also get books for ourselves.

There is her pile...

and then there is his.

Unfortunately by the time I took these photos, he had already carted the boys' books to the attic to document since it was too warm downstairs. I'll have to get a count from him later. eta: 90+ books for the boys. But we get a lot! That cart was filled more than once...

Sounds like surgery...

Naw, it wasn't surgery but it was a bit of a shock when I came home Friday to..

finger infected, --> Emergency room

So I called dh on his cell, waited to see if he would call back, debated whether I should go to the hospital, wondering when this finger issue started, how could he have not mentioned it. etc. etc.
Finally I get a call and he is on his way to the grocery store to pick up a prescription for the infection.

The boy arrives home like this.

I hear a saga about it only feeling funny that a.m (when I am out all day) and suddenly being filled with pus. ugh. Whatever caused it, I have my strong feelings that the fact that someone is a cuticle picker has some bearing on the problem. Whatever. But I think what "I" brought home helps the cure.

Crabacakes...part of any great 4th of July weekend - with a chocolate eclair and a cream cheese brownie for dessert...That helps cure all ills.

Flashback Friday

This little one will be 11 years old on Tuesday...how time flies.

She's no longer interested in a Barbie pink cake and party, but wants (and is getting! courtesy of the heart-stopping eBay auction) a Vera Bradley purse. Actually, it's easier now when I can ask her for a list of what she'd like, and know I can get a gift that pleases her. She's still a beauty ...in size ten shoes!
