Dishing the Week

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW... it's cool and nearly night.

I AM THINKING...that the memorial service weekend was not as hard as I thought it would be. Gloria, we finally washed all your ashes off!

I AM THANKFUL FOR...for the time I had to spend with Stephanie this weekend. Old friends are the best.

FROM THE KITCHEN...there is only a slight bit of the crab dip left and I have no desire to even go near it!

I AM WEARING...black slacks, a long sleeved J. Jill pebbly top. I am so glad there is a store near me. The poor woman's Eileen Fisher as I think of them.

I AM CREATING...the beginning of the end of my class with Cathy Zielske, ME: The Abridged Version

I AM GOING...to read tonight tho I'd really like to watch a movie instead but I know I'll regret staying up late again if I do.

I AM READING...The Little Stranger, well, I'll start it later tonight. I loved the latest Isabelle Dalhousie book, The Lost Art of Gratitude.

I AM HOPING...that I don't have to tutor this coming week, but if I do it's ok.

I AM HEARING...crickets and the whoosh of the occasional car. A quiet Sunday evening.

AROUND THE HOUSE...it seems very quiet after my dear friend headed back to Georgia tonight. But it's also good not to hear her cell constantly ringing.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS...is hearing live music and going to hear the Subdudes today with Steph was just like old times. I miss a music buddy.

A FEW PLANS FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK...Finish the the ME album, get rebadged for tutoring at the jail , and do some stockpile cooking for The Man.

Flashback Friday

It really did look like this the first time I flew into Heathrow. 1965. Who could have imagined it becoming the humongous airport it now is.

Comfort Food

Yes, it's comfort food time. I can certainly tell when I'm not feeling up to par. I lose my appetite. That is really strange for me. And that time has come. I don't get sick often but the red flag is not being hungry but knowing I need to eat. I try to stick to some protein at these times but sometimes that doesn't work. I then feel nauseous as I did this morning when I had some hard boiled eggs.

The blahs are time for my comfort foods. We all have them. My one dear friend is a mashed potato person. That would feel like serious punishment to me. So what DO I want? No red licorice right now. It's been one day with a staple that always makes me feel good, tunafish, rice and mushroom soup. White and bland. How do you make this, you ask? or maybe you don't ask but it is simple and it is a good comfort dish. One can tuna fish, preferably in oil mixed in a saucepan with one can cream of mushroom soup. NO liquid. Heat and pour over some rice. Nowadays you can even get precooked rice. I saw it the other day in the store! But I usually try to freeze a portion or two of rice ..just in case. Zap it in the micro and Bob's your uncle.

Other dishes for the blahs for me include one even worse. The Chef's ravioli, straight from the can. Cold or rather room temperature. Best eaten sitting down so the telltale signs aren't on the front of whatever I'm wearing.

But today I went all out. Ramen. I even had some fresh shrimp to add something real to the chemicals/noodles combo. I was never a starving student, but I was a harried government worker, and those noodles were always fast. Somehow the seasoning seems blander these days. I ate these while reading about making fresh bread and other goodies late at night. The whole idea made me want to take a nap. So I think I will.

Souper Saturday on Monday

Jain had this soup and even tho it is all cans, it's also a great end of summer soup with endless tweaking potential. I can imagine it with steamed shrimp and crispy tortilla strips.

Dishing the Week

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW... the breeze is blowing, the sun is warming the air, and the cat is reluctant to share that window with me. Hey! it's my room you know!

I AM THINKING...that someone may want to have the furnace on when he gets home. In the mornings i.e.

I AM THANKFUL FOR...the recent time alone I've had. Time to be alone with my own thoughts, time to do some clearing out, and time to watch movies.

FROM THE KITCHEN...nothing. Maybe I'll finish up the posole so we can have it for supper tonight. I didn't even feel like cooking for the Artist Way peeps when they came Friday night. I also cleaned out the dishes part of the pantry and have a lot to wrap so they can go to charity.

I AM WEARING...black slacks, a long sleeved tan t-shirt, and non-skid socks. The days of short sleeves seem to be just about over.

I AM CREATING...more space in my life. Vietnam Vets is coming tomorrow and taking more stuff.

I AM GOING...out to lunch? Maybe.

I AM READING...Anita Desai short stories but they are too 'down' for bedtime. I have a 'hold' at the library for tomorrow.

I AM HOPING...that I can get rid of two old rugs tomorrow.

I AM HEARING...crickets and the whoosh of the occasional car. A quiet Sunday morning.

AROUND THE HOUSE...it's clean and fairly straight. What furniture can go?

ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS...is usually red licorice but the stuff I got from Giant isn't quite cutting it.

A FEW PLANS FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK...very little 'have to's' this week. Only a memorial service for a friend. I usually like these but not this one.

Super Saturday

No soup for you! though there is a posole in the fridge for the boy when he gets back home. This Saturday is super, not souper. And what a motherload I found at Bri Lehman's blog. I saw her free textures, wonderful images like these yesterday. Look at this one. I can see so many possibilities here.

Then as I scrolled thru the blog which I hadn't looked at for a while, I drifted off to her Ephemera downloads. If you like this sort of thing, and I DO!

then be sure to check her link to a whole treasure trove of copyright free goodies. Isn't she super? That's Bri Lehman, The Craft Begins. Incidently, she was a Swap-Bot partner many swaps ago. Didn't I luck out?!?!

Flash Forward Friday

Just some goodies to share with you.. all sorts of Hubble Wallpaper images like this ...

I can see a lot of digital uses here.

Why I love blogs or can we get here in time for lunch?

While this is not a food blog per se, food does play a larger than necessary part of our lives. I love to cook, he loves to eat, well ok...we love to eat and there is nothing better on road trips than to find a restaurant that has something at least one of us really, really likes. For me, one of those things is pierogis. I'm talking cheese pierogis smothered with fried onions, slippery and nose tingling. My arteries have learned to cope. I'm not interested in potato pierg1s - at all! but I can do with some filled with sauerkraut. But cheese, farmers' cheese, pierogis...ah that's all the best of my childhood in an edible form.

Fall starts to get me thinking about these goodies, and low and behold as I was catching up on the blogroll, what do I find but a reference to this over at notMartha. Well that woman gets extra points from me for giving me some more places to try in Cleveland. Yes, Cleveland. We're stopping there coming and going on our annual pilgrimage to the Chicago Opera. I need to do a serious clean out of a freezer so I can stock up on the goodies from this place - pierogis in particular. Oh I'm salivating just thinking about it.

What I did Tonight

Today is the primary for Mayor in the City of Annapolis and this year we both voted at the USNA Stadium. We wondered why and one of the people there said that the schools are run by the County and this is a City election. For cryin' out loud... Anyhow, we always get our little "I Voted" stickers and I needed to show it off somewhere. So you're it. I'm a good citizen, aren't I!

(and yes, there's a lotta stuff on that table behind me...)

Dishing the Week

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW...

the grass is just cut and looks absolutely perfect. It's not hot nor is it cold, and it's a perfect into fall day.

I AM THINKING...

that my life is darn good. Things seem to be level and the only niggly bit in my head is my son over in Afghanistan. I get more than a twinge every time I read about a horrendously injured person over there as I did twice this a.m.

I AM THANKFUL FOR...

the great week I had to myself while Dick went biking in Williamsburg. I didn't get much of anything major done but I stayed up as late as I felt like and ate on my own schedule. I also watched some tv shows on my new TV.

FROM THE KITCHEN...

I didn't cook much but one thing I did make was a peach cobbler for a friend, or rather a nectarine cobbler. I decided early in the week to make the rib roast I had in the freezer for myself but it took forever to thaw. By the time I cooked it, I really had no time to eat it. I also realized it had cooked more than I wanted because I had it on convection. Big sigh for me but in the end it was still too rare for Dick so the reheating worked fine - for him. I also realized my horseradish was old and bitter. Too bad...

I AM WEARING

cropped khaki pant and a white short sleeved t-shirt. These days it's a question of short sleeve? long sleeve? as the temperature fluctuates from chilly to more temperate. The seasons, they are a-changing. I think it may be time to put the sandals away tho.

I AM CREATING...

lots of digital pages and slowly working on the digital album for the Cathy Zileske class. That is getting slower and slower as I still am procrastinating about doing the writing. I have a video to watch so maybe that will get me more in the mood to write. I'm not even sure how the layout will actually be done. I'm at least going to look into that today. I may be behind but that's ok. It's all on my schedule. There is also the altered book to look at and see how I'm going to finish it. Is that to be done this Friday??? Can I get more done before the Artist Way session?

I AM GOING...

not many places this week except up to the jail I think for tutoring. I have to call and see if we have students. Saturday will be a big trip in that I'm going to a charity football game with my dil and all three grandchicks. I hope we have good weather and that the girls can have patience for the game. It's being held at dgs's high school where he is now in his freshman year. How time flies!

I AM READING...

The Book of Splendour by Frances Sherwood and Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah. I have vowed to read my own huge stash before I dare bring any more home from the library. This has been hard but last week there wasn't a lot of reading going on as I watched things on that new big tv screen.

I AM HOPING...

that I can clean up the studio worktables this week and get those nectarines canned.

I AM HEARING...

the bamboo rustling about outside and both of the wind chimes in back. It's strange that we hear the bamboo chimes as we seldom got wind in that direction before.

AROUND THE HOUSE...

I finally got around to signing up a cleaning service and they start this coming week. Hallelujah!

ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS...

is being retired. I still love not having to go where I don't want to go.

A FEW PLANS FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK...Can nectarines, make a cobbler for the grandchicks, move the magazines upstairs, see if I can get a commitment about painting the dining room wall, get new walking shoes, get walking in the am

(This idea came from Jain over at Once in a Blue Moon. I love the idea of doing a weekly wrap up and re-centering on Sunday.)

Verbal Desert

I don't know quite what it is but not many words are coming to me lately, or to put it more clearly I have fewer occasions where I want to say...Let me say this about that. This is so unlike me and the only thing I can attribute it to is that I have a project that requires writing, writing about what I DO think about this and that and then some more this's and that's.

I'm doing Cathy Zielske's ME: the Abridged Version and all that's necessary in the writing is to have 2 or 3 words for each letter of the alphabet and write 175+ words about each one. I get to pick words that have meaning for me, and that has been easy enough to do but now I balk..I mean seriously avoidance balk ...at actually doing the writing. Little Ms ESTJ does not want to look at that other side ...the INFP. Well I'm ok with the P.I can do open ended and like to do so on vacation a lot. Big Picture N? I don't know if I really ever get there much and I'm fine with that one. It's the IF. What do "I" feel about those words. Feel, not think. My gut reaction is to say "I don't know!!" I do strongly suspect that I do know what I feel about some of them and I don't like what I feel. While that's ok, right now part of me just wants to let sleeping dogs lie. (Sleeping cats in my case.)

I paid my money to do this and now here I am petulantly saying...I don't wanna and I don't hafta. I don't feel the need to stamp my foot but I'll happily do most anything else but ...write. And NO, I don't want to pray for willingness. Hell no.

But I will. Really I will - because I know that whatever I'm avoiding is something I must needs knowin'. I have enough experience with that. But I'll just be a bit more of a brat today and do that praying tonight. (And listen you up there, I want close to a 24 hr turnaround time on that willingness, ya hear???)

Hope he has good biking weather in VA tho I have a sense his return will be sooner than planned. It always happens.

Scrap the Daily

The BIG truck for the big tv, and the workers who were in a whirl of their own unloading. Dick bumped into me while I was taking that shot, and there was no time for a second one they were so quick. Whooosh! I am content.

Sweet Saturday

Last night was a great time with my Artist Way peeps where we altered books for an exhibit the Pratt Library is having. We enjoyed ourselves so much that no one, NO ONE, took pictures. That's a real first for our group. We do have a round 2 coming up to complete the books so maybe someone will stop making art to document the process. It certainly is a full moon week.

Today I have a whole week ahead of me - on my own. Despite forgetting my birthday ON the day, my dh had ordered my gift which arrived yesterday.

There is still a bit of fiddling to do to get the cable box and the dvd player in a different location but that'll happen. We aren't sure if we want to make/buy a platform to raise the tv up so that all the crapola can go underneath it. We'll see. I seriously want to do something about the stained glass window in the hallway which is directly opposite that tv wall. It appeals to everyone but me, mostly because it has always interfered with watching a tv in the daytime. Upscale problem, huh? So sometimes I prop a piece of cardboard up against it, and sometimes I just wait till it gets dark.

Maybe the Sebastian has a better idea about dealing with that afternoon sun.

I am Such a Virgo

I love this kinda thing. Cutting and pasting and making neat lines etc...then even better organizing the whole bit!

I'm taking Cathy Zielske's ME: The Abridged Version digital class. Actually, as you can see from the cutouts, it's got both digital and paper.

We have tags for each letter of the alphabet, and while these were to be done in the summer, somehow that slipped past me. I guess my mind was still up with Gloria at Johns Hopkins and with Bekah out in AZ. Those are the sad parts of the summer but this is the happy and fun part that balances those things. I made my tag book cover red, but forgot that when I printed on cream, I now have Cream of Tomato! Well, that fit's ...at least it's still food, right?

This isn't part of Cathy's class but it's still out on the worktable. It's the inside paper from T!m Holtz's ruler. I am lovin' that thing. I have a metal ruler but my blade kept actually slicing into the metal...aaaaack. Almost as bad as tin foil on a filling! T!m's ruler had minimal packaging and was EZ to open AND the paper inside is going to be used on an ATC ...someday. How cool is that? It's cool in my book. So back to slicing up the tags, cause I have to refocus on the Altered Book for tonight's Artist Way group. Is this a good day or what?!?!?!
